Analyze the data: What are our technology standards?

The business question What are our technology standards? provides insights to the technology portfolio and enables you to assess whether components are aligned with the company's standards catalogs. Insight about the use of components by the applications ensures that you understand the business importance of the technologies. Promoting standards and reducing the use of non-standard technologies ensures efficiency in IT capabilities and reduces IT costs.

To open this business question, go to the left navigation panel, click to expand Business Questions, click to expand Governance and click What are our technology standards? 

The visualization shows the top two levels of IT capabilities in the IT capability hierarchy that have components assigned to a second level IT capability or its subordinate IT capabilities. The boxes in the heat map are the components assigned to the second level IT capability or its subordinate IT capabilities.

The components are colored based on the value assigned to the Standardization attribute. The size of the boxes is determined by the number of applications that use the component. Point to a component to show a tooltip with the following information: Component name, Standard Classification value, number of applications supported.

Understand the first level IT capabilities that have components assigned to them. Check the Show Components for Level 1 IT Capabilities checkbox. The report will show the top two levels of IT capabilities that have components assigned to the first and second level IT capabilities and their subordinate IT capabilities.

Understand which IT capabilities have non-standard components that are owned by a specific organization. Select an organization in the Business Owner filter field to show only components where the selected organization is the owner.

Understand which IT capabilities have non-standard components that are actively used.

Understand which IT capabilities have components that are approaching retirement. Click an IT capability to navigate to its object profile and go to the Technology Portfolio tab. Open the Components view to understand all components that are assigned to the IT capability. Sort the data set according to the End Date to better understand which components will retire soon.

You can open the Component Use Across Technology Architecture to understand how important the component is for applications across the enterprise. The report displays the components supporting the subordinate IT capabilities of the current IT capability. The size of the boxes indicates the number of applications using the component across the entire enterprise. The bubble color indicates whether the component is standard.

Go to the Data Source tab to view the IT capabilities and components relevant for this business question.

Understand the IT capabilities used for the report. Go to the IT Capabilities Data Workbench to view the IT capabilities used for the report.

Understand the components used for the report. Go to the Component Data Workbench to view all components used for the report. Sort the Object State column to show only components that are currently in an Active object state. Review the Standardization column to understand which components are standard. Specify the Standardization attribute for components that are not yet specified.

Go to the Data Quality tab to assess the quality of the data used for this business question. Data quality issues occur if any of the following occur:

  • The Standardization attribute is not set for a component. You should specify this attribute for all components for which issues have been found. Click the link to define the Standardization attribute in the Basic Data step of the Component wizard.
  • The component that an application uses is not specified for the application. Click the link to open the Components view to define the components for the selected application.
