The business question What are our technology standards? provides insights to the technology portfolio and enables you to assess whether components are aligned with the company's standards catalogs. Insight about the use of components by the applications ensures that you understand the business importance of the technologies. Promoting standards and reducing the use of non-standard technologies ensures efficiency in IT capabilities and reduces IT costs.
component
A component is a reusable block of functionality that provides technical services and/or business functionality to the applications or platforms using it. An operating system, database management system, or application server are examples of components that an application typically requires.
IT capability
An IT capability bundles and structures content-specific components necessary for the IT infrastructure of data center operations. Mainframe operations, database management, and backup and recovery procedures are examples of IT capabilities.
The visualization shows the top two levels of IT capabilities in the IT capability hierarchy that have components assigned to a second level IT capability or its subordinate IT capabilities. The boxes in the heat map are the components assigned to the second level IT capability or its subordinate IT capabilities.
The components are colored based on the value assigned to the Standardization attribute. The size of the boxes is determined by the number of applications that use the component. Point to a component to show a tooltip with the following information: Component name, Standard Classification value, number of applications supported.
To understand the first level IT capabilities that have components assigned to them:
Check the Show Components for Level 1 IT Capabilities checkbox. The report will show the top two levels of IT capabilities that have components assigned to the first and second level IT capabilities and their subordinate IT capabilities.
To understand which IT capabilities have non-standard components that are owned by a specific organization:
Select an organization in the Business Owner filter field to show only components where the selected organization is the owner.
To understand which IT capabilities have non-standard components that are actively used:
Select Active in the Object State filter field. Review which active components are non-standard and assess based on the box size whether they are used by many applications. Click a non-standard component to navigate to its object profile. The Component and Application Lifecycles provides insight about applications using the component. For a non-standard component, you should consider which of these applications could be migrated to a standard component. The Component Use Across Business Architecture enables you to see which business capabilities and organizations are supported by the applications that use the component.
To understand which IT capabilities have components that are approaching retirement:
Click an IT capability to navigate to its object profile and go to the Technology Portfolio tab. Open the Components view to understand all components that are assigned to the IT capability. Sort the data set according to the End Date to better understand which components will retire soon.
You can open the Component Use Across Technology Architecture to understand how important the component is for applications across the enterprise. The report displays the components supporting the subordinate IT capabilities of the current IT capability. The size of the boxes indicates the number of applications using the component across the entire enterprise. The bubble color indicates whether the component is standard.

Go to the Data Quality tab to assess the quality of the data used for this business question. Data quality issues occur if any of the following occur:
- The Standardization attribute is not set for a component. You should specify this attribute for all components for which issues have been found. Click the link to define the Standardization attribute in the Basic Data step of the Component wizard.
- The component that an application uses is not specified for the application. Click the link to open the Components view to define the components for the selected application.
