Using Super Natural with Con-nect

This section describes the interface between Super Natural and Con-nect.

This section covers the following topics:

What is the Super Natural Con-nect Interface?

You can write report data to Con-nect documents using the transaction modes for reporting Report Type CON-NECT and Destination CON-NECT.

To use the Super Natural Con-nect interface, you must have a cabinet in Con-nect with the same name as your user ID in Super Natural

Report Type CON-NECT

Report Type CON-NECT is intended for the creation of form letters. When you create a transaction with Report Type CON-NECT, text variables in a selected Con-nect document are replaced with values from the resulting report. A separate Con-nect document is written for each record found by Super Natural.

You can use Report Type CON-NECT with all Report Destinations except WORK FILE, PC FILE and USER FILE.

Start of instruction setTo create a form letter

  1. Add a reporting transaction with Report Type CON-NECT.

When you leave the Add Transaction window, the CON-NECT Documents window appears which lists all the Con-nect documents available which contain text variables.

  2. Select a Con-nect document. You cannot use a document which contains Con-form system variables.

The following version of the Worksheet appears:

     16:11 ***** Super Natural ***** 07.Jan.1998

Enter "*" in Fieldname column to select fields or enter NEXT
     Command ===>

The Text Variable and Sort (S) columns are specific to Report Type CON-NECT.

  3. Enter in the Field Name column the names of the fields whose contents you want to write to a Con-nect text variable.

You can also enter an asterisk (*) to get a selection list of the fields available.

  4. If you want the contents of a field to be written to a Con-nect text variable, enter the name of the text variable you want the contents of a field to be written to next to the field in the Text Variable column.

You can also enter an asterisk (*) to get a selection list of the Con-nect text variables available in the document you have chosen.

If the document you have selected contains a text variable which you do not want to link to a field in Super Natural, the text variable field in Con-nect is left blank when you run the transaction.

  5. Use the Sort (S) column to define sort fields as described in the section Sort/Control Column in the section Working with the Worksheet. You cannot define control breaks.

The other columns function as described in the section Working with the Worksheet.

  6. Specify your selection criteria.

You can also specify logical conditions, calculation or file linking if you wish.

  7. Issue the RUN command.

A formatted Con-nect document is created for each record found by the Super Natural transaction. The Con-nect text variables are replaced by the values of the fields you linked them to on the Worksheet.

An example of a Con-nect document created for a record found by a transaction using Report Type Con-nect in conjunction with Destination SCREEN is shown below:

 16:15:36 NAME = 'A' THRU 'AC' 1998-01-07

  Dear MS Adelman,

This letter was created using a Con-nect document which contains variables.

These variables were replaced with actual values from our Demo Database with
  the help of Super Natural.

Your personal data is stored under the personnel number: 104439.
  In particular:

                     Name: Adelman
               First name: Anna
                      Job: VICE PRESIDENT
                    Hobby: SHAKESPEARE

 Enter-PF1---PF2---PF3---PF4---PF5---PF6---PF7---PF8---PF9---PF10--PF11--PF12--
             Print Exit Flip + Cancel
Warning:
When you run a transaction of Report Type CON-NECT and Destination CON-NECT, a Con-nect document is created for EACH record found. You can issue the COUNT command to check how many records will be found.

Report Destination CON-NECT

When you add a transaction with Destination CON-NECT, the resulting report data is written as a document to Con-nect.

When you run the transaction, a screen indicating the number of records sent to Con-nect is displayed.

Start of instruction setTo invoke Con-nect

If the transaction is of Report Type CON-NECT, the resulting documents are formatted and stored in the system folder Compose.

For all other types of reports available, the resulting document is stored in the system folder SuperNatural. This folder is called Connect as of Con-nect Version 2.4.

You can process these documents using Con-nect.

For further information, see the Con-nect User's Guide or contact your Con-nect administrator.

When you leave Con-nect, you return to your Super Natural session automatically.

The following is an example of a document sent to Con-nect using Destination CON-NECT and Report Type LIST:
