Version Notation Convention

The version (release) of a Software GmbH product is identified by the first two digits of the version number. These numbers distinguish between major and minor versions according to the amount of functionality or technology added to the product. All other digits indicate a service pack.

  • Major Version

The first digit of the product version number indicates major architecture and functionality implementation or enhancement that adds value to the product.

  • Minor Version

The second digit of the version number indicates functionality addition, enhancement, or fix that adds value to the product.

  • Service Pack

The third digit of the version indicates a Service Pack which is an accumulation of fixes delivered as a planned release. It may additionally include new features. It can be denoted by "SP" in the version numbering.

In the product documentation, the notation vrs, vr, or v is often used as a placeholder for the current product version, for example, in data set or module names.
